The saints of the Old Testament who died before Christ's Incarnation were relegated to Limbo, the border of Hell.  Christ descended into this region, where he vanquished Satan, freed the saints and led them into heaven.  "The Harrowing of Hell" is an Old and Middle English term for this scene, which is less represent in Western art than Byzantine East, under the title Anastasis (Ressurrection), it became the standard scene for the feast of Easter.
